This new system provides medical professionals with the means to capture the signals from these new methods and view heart rate and its variability in real time through a head-mounted display. The HoloLens accelerometer detects the user's own heart rate by head movement, which indicates that blood is discharged (ballistocardiography) during each cardiac cycle.
To determine the heart rate in the user's field of view, the computer vision software developed by the research team used HoloLens' camera to identify the subject's face and then filtered the camera's red, green, and blue colors to create a time-varying signal.
