Samsung Electronics and British communications infrastructure and media service provider Arqiva announced today an agreement to launch the first 5G trials in the UK, focusing on fixed wireless access. This experiment will prove that 5G has the potential to replace optical fiber, and as a precursor to future 5G enhanced mobile broadband services, it will provide consumers with fast broadband services.

Simon Beresford-Wylie, executive director of Arqiva, stated: "5G will be the key pillar of the UK economy in 2020. The enhanced capabilities of smart network infrastructure and support for index-scale connectivity will be for markets such as IoT, industrial applications and self-driving cars. We will open up more applications. Our experiment with Samsung will demonstrate 5G FWA as an alternative to fiber to provide ultra high-speed Internet connectivity for homes and businesses."

The trial will be conducted in London in the second half of 2017 and they will deploy an end-to-end 5G FWA solution network in the city center, operating in the 28 GHz band. Samsung's 5G access units (base stations) use high-frequency millimeter-wave spectrum and advanced technologies such as beamforming to provide high-density coverage and ultra-high bandwidth connections to nearby homes or offices where client devices are installed. Millimeter wave is an ideal choice for 5G fixed wireless access type services because it allows operators to make use of unutilized spectrum in the frequency bands above 6 GHz and provide competitive broadband services to a wider audience in a shorter period of time.

Samsung's compact 5G access units are designed for quick and easy deployment, while client devices allow users to access within minutes. This makes the 5G fixed wireless service more advantageous than the FTTH or FTTB (Fibre to the Home/Architecture), whether it is the service launch time or the required cost of the service provider and the user. At the same time, the service is very powerful and can provide Gigabit broadband speeds to the entire community and can easily be expanded to support future new services.

Due to its important infrastructure assets (including mobile sites and lamp posts that can be used to install 5G access units), Arqiva is one of Samsung's best partners in the UK. This also makes Arqiva lead in the upcoming 5G deployment.
