BYD's "ambition" intends to regain the supremacy?

BYD, which started with batteries, has a 23-year history of development. In 2003, the company grew to be the world's second largest manufacturer of rechargeable batteries. In the same year, BYD Auto was also established. With strong accumulation and leading technology, it was surpassed in 2017 by the Ningde era, which was established only 7 years ago and remained unknown until 2014. Data show that the installed capacity of BYD's power battery in 2017 was 5.43GWh, while CATL easily surpassed it with 10.4GWh.

It can be said that BYD itself gave the opportunity to be surpassed by the Ningde era. BYD has always insisted on holding high the banner of lithium iron phosphate, but the adjustment of the new energy vehicle subsidy policy has caused the rise of ternary material batteries in 2014. BYD's slowness in battery technology route and foreign cooperation has made it missed many opportunities. After awakening, BYD began to fully use ternary material batteries in passenger cars, and began to exert ternary material battery production capacity. Data shows that before 2018, BYD’s battery plants in Shenzhen and Huizhou had a total production capacity of 16GWh, of which lithium iron phosphate was 10GWh and ternary materials were 6GWh. The Qinghai power battery plant with an annual capacity of 24GWh, which was put into operation in June this year, basically produces ternary batteries. The projects that BYD subsequently signed are expected to be mainly ternary batteries.

In order to reduce the worries of vehicle companies, BYD has begun to split its battery business and seek independent listing of its battery business. Shen Xi, deputy general manager of BYD's lithium battery business unit, said recently that BYD is doing the divestiture of the power battery business, and it is expected that the split will be completed by the end of 2018 or early 2019. Leading companies' capacity expansion accelerates industry overcapacity concerns intensify

Since the beginning of this year, many companies have expanded their power battery production capacity. For example, South Korea’s LG Chem’s annual output of 32GWh power battery project settled in Nanjing, Jiangsu, Funeng Technology signed a contract with an annual output of 20GWh power battery project in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, and Korea SKI’s annual output of 7.5GWh power The battery project is planned to be built in Jintan, Jiangsu, and Thornton New Energy's annual output of 5GWh high-energy-density power battery is put into production. According to the data released by CATL, its production capacity in 2018 will also reach 31.1GWh, and it is expected to reach 54GWh in 2020; in addition, CATL has signed agreements with Changan, Dongfeng, GAC and SAIC to establish joint ventures to jointly produce power. Battery, this part of the production capacity has not yet been announced.

Although the prospects for the development of new energy vehicles are promising, the production and sales of new energy vehicles will be a process of steady growth, and it is difficult for the demand for power batteries to reproduce the blowout growth. The Power Battery Application Branch predicts that if my country's new energy vehicle sales are near the target of 2 million vehicles by 2020, under this premise, the market demand for power batteries will only be 119GWh. From the current public data, only the two giants of CATL and BYD's production capacity have far exceeded this figure.
