Cold night, that touch of warm light - Interview with Ding Ping, chief designer of lighting design at Le Tingdi, UK

The connection between literature and design

China-designer : How did you change from a literary youth to a design elite?

Ding Ping: First of all, I am not an elite. Many people think that the span of literature and design is particularly large. And I don't think so. Many good designers abroad have a wide range of knowledge. In the past ten years, many domestic designers have turned from painting, because some foundations can draw some sketches. Take it to the customer and you will get some project orders. Domestically, we will pay more attention to the training of some skills, such as how to draw on the table, how to draw bamboo, how to paint the house, there will be some basic training. I feel that when a person has passed this stage, you will find that designers will observe life more and pay attention to communication and communication between design and people. Designers will pay more attention to some of the inner feelings and experiences. I have also seen the growth of Koolhaas, Ando and others, and found that they have worked in other fields before designing.

I can't say that basic training is not important, but I think that for a designer, his responsibility is to create some practical and easy-to-use environments and products that make people feel comfortable. This is the designer. The industry is ultimately subject to social respect. You can't say that you will be 3DMAX and other software, you are a designer. Just like writing and learning words, even if you write more words, when you don't feel inside, your expression is pale. Many foreign students study architecture, and the first thing he must learn in the first year is history and literature. As a designer, he has been in an atmosphere of continuous observation and learning for a lifetime. No one can say that he is full of learning. He is a master. The master is said by others. All in all, as long as you have something in your heart, whether you are turning it into words or graphics, it is all about communicating with people.

a time when I first went

China-designer : Talk about your feelings from the blank market point to the present.

Ding Ping: We have been here for 5 years. In fact, when I came, I didn't think about how to fight hard. When I came over, it was passive. The company sent it. But when I came, I found that there are a lot of things that make me excited. This soil has many opportunities.

When I first came, I felt that it was a blank, and there will definitely be market demand. But I don't know what to do. At the beginning, I was directly looking for the city's leaders. Because the city was doing a large-scale lighting project, I wrote to people to tell them what kind of company they were and what they could do for them. But nothing happened.

The different classifications of customers that have been separated in recent years. There may be towns, some are private, and some are foreign companies. And we often face some international developers and private developers and high-end projects.
