EU approves mandatory social platform to prohibit hate speech proposal

【Global Science and Technology Report】 According to the British "Daily Mail" reported on May 23, European Union ministers have approved proposals to allow social media such as Facebook/Twitter and YouTube to ban hate speech on their platforms. Before formal legislation, the proposal still needs the approval of the EU Parliament.

The proposal was passed at a meeting held one day after the concert explosion in Manchester, England. EU officials stated that video sharing is an “important part” of social media and operators must take measures to remove hate speech and incitement to terrorism. The current proposal is only for video stored on the platform, not including live video, such as Facebook Live.

Ansipu, vice chairman of the European Commission, said: "We need to consider new ways of watching videos and encourage innovation to protect children in a better way and eliminate hate speech.

As hate speech and fake news continue to spread on social media, the pressure on website operators is increasing day by day. (Internship Compilation: Ru Yafei Reviewer: Li Zongze)
