Japan's Shimei Semiconductor has developed a blue LED that is generated on silicon wafers and plans to go on sale next April. The company claims that using silicon wafers as GaN epitaxial substrates can significantly reduce cost, simplify LED structure, extend lifetime, and enable optics to be integrated into CMOS circuits. The prototype LED emits 450 nm of blue light with an output of 10 mW. In addition to blue LEDs, Shimei is working on longer wavelength LEDs, including green and red LEDs. At the same time, the company also began to develop blue lasers. Shimei said that it is preparing a production line with a monthly capacity of 3 million units and will start producing samples in April 2007. The above LEDs will be supplied in the form of a die or wafer.
