For transformers with a capacity of 400KV·A and above, when several units are operated in parallel or in a single operation and used as backup power for other loads, overload protection should be installed according to possible overload conditions. Overload protection and gas protection in the case of minor faults (commonly known as "light gas"), acting on the signal, while other protections include gas protection in the event of a serious fault (commonly known as "heavy gas"), generally acting on a trip. For the main transformer of the total step-down substation of the factory with a high voltage side of 35KV and above, overcurrent protection, current quick-break protection and gas protection should also be installed; when there is a possibility of overload, overload protection should also be installed. However, if the capacity of a single transformer running at 10000KV·A and above and the parallel operation of each transformer is 6300KV·A or more, it is required to install a longitudinal differential protection instead of the current quick-break protection.
Transformer line protection
For the main transformer of the workshop substation with high voltage side of 6~10KV, overcurrent protection with time limit is usually installed; if the overcurrent protection action time is greater than 0.5~0.7s, current quick-break protection should also be installed. Oil-immersed transformers with a capacity of 800KV·A and above and oil-immersed transformers of 400KV·A and above shall be equipped with gas protection (also known as gas relay protection) as required.
