On May 28, unnamed sources pointed out that Apple and GTAT intend to expand the Mesa plant's land occupation in order to cope with the increase in the yield of certain parts.
Matt Margolis, an analyst who had previously reported GTAT's purchases of the apple sapphire crystal furnace, pointed out through Seeking Alpha that the GTAT announcement earlier this week showed that the company had partially withdrawn from Apple's $576 million advance payment. It was used to renovate the plant in Massachusetts (formerly the R&D lab) and installed the same crystal growth furnace as the Arizona Sapphire Material Plant.
Margolis said the Salem plant should be able to add an additional 20 million pieces per year to the sapphire screen.
According to the Insider, the Salem plant covers only 50,000 square feet, much smaller than the 1.3 million square feet of the Mesa plant. It is unclear whether Apple will supply it to the Salem plant or just use it as a test. The Salem plant seems to have grown sapphire crystals since December 2013.
Apple and GTAT plan to expand the sapphire material plant footprint
Apple's sapphire material supplier GTAT's eye-catching sapphire material plant in Mesa, Arizona, was not the only factory that the company and Apple have jointly established. The latest announcement to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) shows that the two companies A second sapphire plant has been built in Salem, Massachusetts.
