Infineon Announces Family of Light Switch Products for LEDs and Ordinary Bulbs
Infineon Technologies AG announces a new family of five-channel high-side smart power switches for controlling standard bulbs and LED lights in automotive interior and exterior Lighting systems, providing manufacturers with flexible solutions to keep up with The trend of replacing ordinary light bulbs with LED lights. The BTS 55XX SPOC (SPI Power Controller) family integrates N-channel MOSFETs and charge pump cells with control logic and circuit protection into a single-chip system-in-package (SiP) design. Integrating these features into the standard JEDEC P-DSO-36 package not only improves troubleshooting, but also reduces component count and design cost and size of the lighting system electronic control unit (ECU). SPI brings greater diagnostic power and simpler design Each SPOC component has an SPI (serial peripheral interface) for control and diagnostics and a normal parallel input pin for direct PWM operation. In addition, the BTS 55XX includes current sense signals for each channel, using internal multiplexing to reduce the number of microcontroller I/O pins. The BTS 55XX also features a self-regulating current limit to limit power dissipation during short circuits. With SPOC, open load and other faults (such as overtemperature and overload) can be resolved in the ON state. Compared to typical status pins on discrete smart power drivers, the fault diagnosis is primarily based on the latching fault signal for each channel read on the SPI. The latching fault signal does not require reading the software timing coordination signal, which is very helpful for PWM applications. Regardless of the number of SPOC devices used, all troubleshooting can be done through separate microcontroller A/D pins and SPI lines, and can be shared with other SPI-based devices such as system-based chips for in-vehicle networking. In this way, smart power drivers can be connected to fewer microcontroller I/O ports, simplifying hardware and software design while reducing PCB layout difficulty. These advantages are further enhanced when multiple SPOC devices are used in ECU design. For LED and general bulbs NEXT# For automotive applications, OEMs are replacing ordinary bulbs with LEDs, which are more filial and lighter and easier to integrate and manufacture. Because LEDs are more efficient and reliable than regular light bulbs, this allows designers to improve power management efficiency and greatly reduce vehicle headlights during vehicle use. Infineon's SPOC family provides a common platform for designing highly integrated ECUs that can flexibly support multiple bulb and LED configurations. SPOC devices (excluding the BTS 5566GX) can be configured in either bulb or LED mode, using the same hardware to drive two different load types. Mode selection changes the on-state resistance (R DS/on), current limit, and switching slew rate, but both load modes optimally handle switching, protection, and diagnostic accuracy. This allows the common ECU to be easily shared between different models using ordinary light bulbs or LEDs. The fail-safe BTS 5590GX features an integrated watchdog circuit with fault protection. The watchdog is supported by an advanced state machine via SPI, but is a county-safe "limp-home" feature. In the event of an ECU failure or short circuit, the watchdog will start and the SPOC device can be configured so that each channel can default to a known operational state. Each SPOC device has a dedicated input pin that accepts a self-protection signal from the BTS 5590GX (or any other device with a watchdog). This is especially important in safety-critical applications such as vehicle exterior lighting. If a fault occurs at night, the system can activate a “self-protection†mode, in which all side lights, turn signals and tail lights can be turned on to enable the vehicle to be seen, improving the safety of the driver and passengers. Availability and pricing The first product of the SPOC product family, the BTS 5590GX, is now available for design projects. The product comes with an evaluation kit that will be used in automotive production in 2007. Ordered in engineering samples, the BTS 5590GX is priced at $4.35, and the product family's follow-up products, the BTS 5566GX and BTS 5576GX, will be available in early 2007. All SPOC devices are packaged in a “green†lead-free RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) package.
