There are also some VR games that emphasize immersion and ambience, such as Land's End, which is a puzzle game. The scene of the game is very beautiful, and the “participation” it brings is not provided by the traditional screen interface. Some games offer "alternate reality" effects. If there is a problem with the connection, the user can play regular videos and movies (stored in the phone), and the experience is equally good, just like having a personal movie theater. If you want to watch a complete movie with VR, it is a bit difficult, and it is not recommended to use it frequently.

VR content is not cheap. Once the free games and videos are finished, we're afraid there is no incentive to pay for other experiences, and most of the content is enough to see once. We tested the Gear VR helmet with the Galaxy S7. Obviously, the S7 is the best choice, it can provide a smooth VR experience, after all, the S7 components are more powerful than the S6. In theory, the S7 is equipped with a 5160x1440 resolution 5.1-inch display, which should be able to display clearer Image, which has a higher pixel density than the 5.5-inch S7 Edge.

In actual use, no matter how you watch it, we can still see the granulated pixels. The same problem exists in high-end helmets, not only Gear VR. The image at the edge of the black frame is clear without the image in the center of the screen. Again, the same problem exists with other helmets.

When we move the head, the Gear image will become clearer, the phone's refresh rate is only 60Hz, and sometimes there will be obvious ghosting. The helmet uses the menu cross cursor to tell us where to look. When the head moves, the cursor leaves a distinct shadow. Of course, the problem is not serious, you won't vomit immediately, but the experience is really unpleasant, and the experience will be even worse when the frame rate drops (normal).

Whether the user will be plagued by technical problems depends on what you are watching. The most attractive part of Gear is the VR game. Most games can be controlled by moving the head, and many games are controlled with a four-way touch pad. The touchpad is mounted on the side of the helmet and we can strike and slide in four directions. Although there is no touch feedback function, the response speed of the touch pad is still very fast. Sometimes we even think: "Do I really touch the slide?"

The advantages of the Samsung Gear VR include: cheap, compatible with all Galaxy S6 and S7 smartphones. Disadvantages include: ghosting is obvious, sometimes the frame rate will slow down, some stagnation, lack of really attractive content, only support S6 and S7 phones. Summary: For VR newcomers, the Samsung Gear VR is a very interesting entry-level product. However, the helmet has technical flaws, lacks attractive content, and has limited appeal in the long run.

Pcmag: Can't play too long

Unfortunately, Gear VR and Galaxy S6 connections are not suitable for long-term games. After playing for 40 minutes, the game is terminated. The Gear VR software pops up a warning message asking me to remove the phone from the Gear VR. Because the phone is too hot, it can be used again after cooling down. Put your phone in the helmet and play the game. If it takes too long, it will overheat. This is a big problem, because the "Darknet" game has no complicated 3D graphics, and there is no beautiful effect. It is not even a mobile game with high configuration requirements. The Galaxy S6 is a flagship mobile phone with powerful performance.

Aside from the heat problem, the quality of Gear VR APP is different, some are practical, some are very entertaining, and some are just technical demonstration samples. No app is a killer app and is a must for VR players. Compared to the helmet in the proof of concept phase (developer kit), or compared to the first two versions of the Oculus Rift, the Gear VR experience is not much better. The APP is elegant, works well, and the number of programs is much larger than in the past, but no application can turn VR into the mainstream.

Digitaltrends: My favorite game is Gunjack.

Battery life is not a big problem, Gear VR has no battery, it is completely powered by mobile phones, Gear VR consumes the same speed as 3D games. Samsung installed the Micro USB interface for the Gear VR, which can be charged while using it, but the cable is easily tangled. When we don't wear a helmet, the display will automatically turn off, but the battery consumption is much faster than the normal idle state. This is a problem that Samsung may fix in the future.

We like the Netflix app very much, but we can't play the video with Gear VR. I hope this problem can be fixed when the software is upgraded. We can browse Facebook, watch 360-degree movies and videos, or check out Twitch, and there are some simple rooms that allow us to interact with others. Still, Gear VR's VR social experience is no more interesting than other devices.

As for the game, the range of options is wide. It is a pity that no game is as attractive as "Radiation 4", and there are no games that can attract you to play for 80 hours. There are many small games in it, which can tell us how novel the helmet is.

My favorite game so far is Gunjack, a simple space shooting game that is similar to a playground. The story of the game is nothing special, but the 3D graphics are very lively. Players can watch the alien spaceship and fire. The experience is unmatched by traditional video games. The first person game "Temple Run VR" is also very exciting, and a little scary. If you think that you are just a gorilla, be prepared to see how it eats you.

"Land's End" is recommended, and its developers have also produced "Monument Valley" (Monument Valley). Land's End is an excellent casual game where players wander between calm islands and solve simple puzzles. Although the graphics of the game are not complicated, the artistic style is vividly reflected. It proves to us that VR can be immersed even if there is no realistic image.
