Sharp's LED uses a blue illuminator in combination with red and green phosphors. The key is that the product is only 3% lighter than conventional LEDs, while other similar products are 20% lighter than conventional LEDs. The LED can also be used directly to replace traditional LEDs without any changes to the LCD display.
Sharp has developed four versions: for small and medium sized LCD panels (thicknesses of 0.4 and 0.6 mm) and two for large sized panels (side-lit and direct-lit white light sources). The sample price is around $0.39 (including tax), and Sharp plans to begin mass production in April 2014.
Sharp explained that because of the use of new materials to develop red and green phosphors, and higher light conversion efficiency, brightness can be achieved larger than existing wide color gamut LCD panels.
