Survey shows that people-oriented lighting helps improve well-being and performance

The University of Twente, the Free University of Amsterdam and the CBRE property consultancy in the Netherlands jointly launched a research study that once again validated the relationship between the work environment and human health, well-being and work ability. In order to carry out the research project, OSRAM has arranged a “people-oriented lighting system” solution for the CBRE headquarters in Amsterdam. The solution includes a time-controlled lighting system that adjusts the lighting in a manner that favors the human circadian rhythm. The results of the survey prove that 76% of the “people-oriented lighting” experiencers feel happier, 50% of the experiencers feel healthier, and 12% of the experiencers perform better in objective experiments.

The interdisciplinary “Health Office” survey enrolled 124 respondents and analyzed more than 100,000 data records, focusing on how the work environment affects the potential of employees. Through a questionnaire survey, experiments, biometric data, daily activity assessments and interviews, the project team conducted a seven-month survey on the impact of changes in the work environment and health.

The research team set five environmental change models that theoretically have the greatest impact on health and employee potential: from health factors such as nutritional health, psychological balance and physical activity; from environmental factors such as natural interior design and appropriate illumination. The project team also analyzed how the lighting will be adjusted according to the intensity of sunlight to match the physiological rhythm of the human body. As a well-known industry expert who proposes the concept of people-oriented lighting, OSRAM is invited to install LED lighting and lighting management solutions for the project.

Lighting scheme adapted to circadian rhythm

Studies over the past few decades have shown that light has a significant impact on our mood and ability to focus, and the most important aspect of quality lighting is time. Our brain regulates the body's circadian rhythm based on the "light signal" of the surrounding environment, which controls our energy levels, mood, alertness or fatigue. When our body clocks are not synchronized with natural time, we become emotional, declining, and difficult to focus.

In order to achieve a people-oriented lighting solution in the survey, OSRAM installed a time-controlled lighting system that is conducive to human circadian rhythms. The lamps can adjust the color of the light (adjustable white) and intensity at different times of the day. Several light sources are arranged on the wall to present a vertical level of illumination. Lights suspended from the ceiling of the open office area provide pleasant indirect light and avoid direct sunlight. In general, the light intensity has almost doubled.

Arktika-P Biolux Adjustable White Light is designed for general office large area lighting. This extremely efficient flat chandelier has two different operating components. LED luminaires emit direct (4000K) and indirect (6500K) white monochromatic light. At different times, white luminescence is distributed from the ceiling through separate controlled direct and indirect components. In the morning and afternoon, high-intensity lighting and indirect white luminescence can motivate employees to work actively. At noon and dusk, soft warm light is in line with natural biological rhythms, which helps to improve happiness and work performance.

The white light-adjustable Lightify Surface Light ceiling luminaire ensures uniform illumination in the room by constantly adjusting the color temperature, such as morning (6500K), afternoon (4000K), and evening (2700K). The fixture is manually controlled via a button or Wireless Lightify Pro. The Lunis wall washer refracts light onto the wall to create vertical light. In the conference room, RGBW ceiling-mounted spotlights can be used to wirelessly select white or colored lights based on different work and meeting communication needs through the Lightify Pro controller.

Research results on "correct lighting"

“Healthy Office” is part of the CBRE office with a new modern lighting configuration. The study found that 18% of the staff here showed a better working condition, 71% appeared more energetic, 76% worked more happily, and 50% felt healthier. Moreover, the survey results recorded a 12% accurate improvement rate. On the first day of the study, the new lighting fixtures made the participants feel very novel and even uncomfortable, but they soon fell in love with the new working environment and expressed their willingness to work in such an environment.

As in previous surveys, research projects have shown that the office is actually an ecosystem with hundreds of different factors that affect health. The humanized transformation of the work environment can bring better job prospects to employees, and it is also a wise business investment; by establishing a healthier office environment, it can avoid the high cost caused by illness, burnout and employee fluctuations.
