The “Thousand Villages Project” jointly initiated by the International Climate Organization and the Suiyu Foundation aims to install solar lighting for villages. It has been located in more than 40 administrative villages in rural areas of Chongqing, Chengdu and Guiyang since the two years since its implementation. It has jointly donated to the village government with enterprises. More than 400 sets of solar LED street lamps have benefited more than 40,000 villagers.

The reporter learned that the “Thousand Villages Project” is an important energy-saving and emission-reduction project implemented in rural areas under the background that the world’s climate change has drastically affected human production and life, energy conservation and emission reduction, and environmental protection concepts are firmly rooted in people’s hearts. The project plans to select 1,000 villages in phases in the world over a period of five years to build a public green lighting system, gradually explore, establish and promote the development and utilization of clean energy in rural areas, improve the ecological environment, and raise the standard of living.

According to statistics, there are currently about 750,000 villages in China, but 200,000 of them cannot achieve normal lighting, and these rural areas are mainly concentrated in the western region. Especially in remote rural areas where the grid construction is backward because of environmental and historical reasons, the status quo of infrastructure determines that the goal of achieving road lighting is still far away.

The partner of the “Thousand Villages Project”, Lin Liangqi, General Manager of Philips Lighting Greater China, told the China Business Daily: “The significance of this system in rural areas is that there is a bright light in places where the original grid was not covered.” Lin Liangqi said. Because there is no cost for the construction of power grids such as wiring and digging pits, the overall installation cost will be reduced, and maintenance costs will also be significantly reduced. This is also very beneficial for improving the efficiency of capital use in new rural construction.

Since solar street lights use solar power, the cost of operation is almost zero, except for the small part of the cost of electricity generated when electricity is converted into electricity on rainy days. It is the intrinsic advantages of solar lighting that will surely become the new darling of the lighting industry. In recent years, many companies have also invested a lot of technology and funds to develop this emerging product. However, as there is no clear industry standard, the entire industry is still turbulent.

Experts believe that solar lighting is still in its infancy in China and will encounter various difficulties in promoting the use of solar energy. However, solar lighting is promising in rural areas.
