High-brightness blue LED research progressed again

Recently, the Liu Jianping team of the Nano Devices Division of the Suzhou Nanotechnology and Nano-Bionics Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has once again made important progress in improving the efficiency of blue LEDs. By adopting a new blue LED active area structure, researchers have achieved ultra-low efficiency blue LEDs on flat sapphire substrates. The research results were published in the Applied Physics Letters.

The invention of GaN-based blue LEDs was hailed as "the second lighting revolution after Edison." Akasaka, Amano and Nakamura Shuji won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics for "inventing high-efficiency blue LEDs and bringing energy-saving bright white light sources". LED lamps that use white LEDs and phosphors to synthesize white light are twice as efficient as fluorescent lamps, and have been widely used in liquid crystal display backlighting, which is infiltrating into the home and office lighting fields, but there are still problems of high prices.

Conventional GaN-based blue LEDs generally have an operating current density of 20 A/cm2, which increases the operating current density of the LEDs and can output more light per unit chip area, thereby reducing the cost of the LED lamps and making the LEDs suitable for use in automotive headlights. And where a projector needs a high light source. However, the problem of the efficiency degradation of blue LEDs operating at high current densities hinders their development in the field of high-power, high-brightness illumination. In recent years, many researchers at home and abroad have studied the causes of the decline in efficiency, trying to solve the problem that the quantum efficiency of blue LEDs decreases drastically with the increase of operating current density.

Since the establishment of the Suzhou Nanotechnology and Nano-Bionics Institute, the research work on GaN-based blue LEDs has been carried out, and industrialization was realized in 2010. (Editor: Flora)
