OLED panel production capacity continues to be long TV giant station display technology

After a full year of 2016, the concept of OLED and flexible screens is much more popular than products. In 2017, OLED development will continue to accelerate, and wallpaper TVs and flexible TVs will be unveiled.

Recently, IHS data shows that the global OLED market will grow by 32% to $19.2 billion in 2017, and shipments of OLED products will increase by 22% to 630 million units.

As OLEDs become more popular, Korean panel makers with technological advantages are paying more attention to the export of OLEDs. In the third quarter of this year, the export value of Korean LCD panels was US$4.84 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 18.3%. At the same time, OLED panel exports increased by 15.8% to $1.7 billion compared to last year.

Liu Buchen, a senior observer in the home appliance industry, told the 21st Century Business Herald: "China, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are all entering the field of OLED panels. In 2016, the global OLED panel investment amounted to 320 billion yuan, but the large-scale release of production capacity will be Wait until 2019."

OLED industry chain accumulation

Although the investment in OLEDs is not reduced, many production lines are still in the construction and accumulation stage.

It is reported that Samsung Electronics, which is owned by Samsung Electronics, will spend 7.4 trillion won to expand OLED panel production this year, and will invest another 5 trillion won next year. LGDisplay is also ambitious and plans to invest 6 trillion won to expand the capacity of large-size OLED panels. Target production increased to 1.7 million tablets.

Just this month, Lu Xiangde, president of the LG DisplayOLED business unit, publicly stated that in 2017, LGDisplay plans to build another large-size OLED production line, and will not rule out the production of OLEDs in Guangzhou in the future.

Domestic panel makers are also vying for fear, and BOE, Hehui Optoelectronics, Hon Hai, Tianma, Xinli, and AUO have all invested in OLED panel production lines. Among them, in the large-screen OLED, BOE took the lead in breaking through, and Skyworth and HiSili jointly developed OLED TV. The next target is mass production, breaking the monopoly of LG. BOE's OLED production line has been changed from Hefei's LCD production line. Once mass production, it will bring huge support to domestic downstream machine manufacturers.

Liu Buchen said: "In the recent OLED theme conference, Skyworth said that the sales volume of May 1 next year is expected to be 10 times that of 2016. At that time, 77-inch wallpaper TV will be launched. Konka and Changhong also said that they will focus on development next year. 4K OLED TV. OLED is the general trend. As for the sales of OLED TVs in the Chinese market, the overall sales volume this year is about 300,000 units, and it is expected to exceed 1 million units next year."

According to the "2016 OLED Display Industry White Paper" released by China Electronics Video Industry Association, in 2015, global OLED panel shipments reached 370 million pieces, up 54% year-on-year; global TV panel shipments were 500,000 pieces, up 195% year-on-year; LG Display's two 8.5-generation lines can open 1.5 million TV panels, which will be three times more than last year.

At the same time, Liu Buchen also pointed out that OLEDs now have less freedom of choice and higher prices, mainly because the panel supply chain is too small. Sigmaintell's report puts forward the same view. OLED TV is subject to the small capacity of the panel supply, low yield and high cost, and the scale cannot be expanded rapidly in the short term.

Two camps

OLED is widely regarded as the next generation of display technology, but not all TV brands are rushing. The companies that firmly follow OLED are Skyworth, Konka and Changhong; the main focuses of Hisense and TCL are laser TV and quantum dot TV. It is not difficult to find that the giants have stood in line during the important transition period in which display technology is about to usher in change.

OLEDs are characterized by self-illuminating and flexible materials that enhance the picture quality while making electronic products thinner, lighter, more power efficient, and flexible. The current quantum dot technology is still based on the improvement of liquid crystal. Because it realizes the breakthrough from micrometer to nanometer, it has higher color gamut on TV display; laser TV uses laser technology to project, A panel is required.

For quantum dot technology, Sigmaintell data shows that the market penetration rate of quantum dot TV has been low in the market for two years. In 2016, the global quantum dot TV market is expected to be 3.5 million units with a penetration rate of only 1.5%. . There are two main reasons for this. First, market monopoly and concentration of suppliers. Because global quantum dot material suppliers are limited to foreign-funded enterprises, among them Nanoco, QDVision and Nanosys are monopoly suppliers, and quantum film is only 3M exclusive supply. As a result, most brands are difficult to mass-produce or mass-sell quantum dot TV. The second problem that comes with this is that the cost is too high.

However, starting from the second half of 2016, the price of the quantum film will gradually decline, and the terminal price will also drop sharply, which will stimulate demand growth. Qunzhi Consulting predicts that the scale of the quantum dot backlight TV market will usher in 2017.

Although Hisense and TCL do not currently produce OLED TVs, TCL has a tendency to enter the OLED market. On the one hand, there are some experimental production lines of OLEDs in the G11 line of Huaxing Optoelectronics started this year. On the other hand, TCL has been researching. New panel printing technology.

Liu Buchen analyzed to reporters: "The fundamental reason why TCL and Hisense have not entered OLED is that there is no screen resource. Hisense and Samsung are closely related. LG is the main provider of OLED TV panels and is in a 'hostile' relationship with Samsung. It is more subtle. The future does not rule out the possibility of TCL and Hisense entering the OLED field, especially after BOE's OLED screen mass production, all brands will purchase."
